What is 3D Chat?
3D Chat is the hackathon project of G31, also known as Practors Devs (a cool name we gave ourselves to stand out), which consists of Alina de Vries, Robin Starkgraff and Marc Maurer.
Our vision:
„We want to create a 3D chat tool where you are able to talk to the people in close proximity to yourself in order to make digital communication a bit more life-like.“
3D Chat
3D Chat is the solution to a problem we regularily encountered during the Covid-19 Pandemic. We felt like we were losing touch to our friends, even though there are many means and ways of communication in this day and age. The existing ways just do not replace the way we met our friends before – face to face, in groups, in rooms. Allowing groups to form small groups of conversation is not possible in a way we imagined it to be. So we made it our duty to replicate the feeling of meeting your friends in person – just digital.
3D Chat Features
3D Chat is more than just your usual voice chat application. 3D Chat supports spatialized voice chat and that character you’re moving through the room – it’s you! A web-cam transmission of your device should be displayed. Let’s compare 3D Chat to competitors:
The Tech Stack
With the 3D Chat project we quickly decided on the technologies used. We used Unity as a framework, C# as the scripting language and photon engine for all things multiplayer. Photon engine is an independent networking engine suitable for Unity. The reason why we used these technologies are listed in the table below.
