What is Soundscape+?
Blind or visual impaired users of Soundscape have the problem that they will use the shortest and not necessarily the safest path and get not enough information about their surroundings when walking to their Soundscape beacon.
Our solution delivers an enhanced navigation assistance by leveraging AI to identify non-mapped objects and providing audio cues for these items, along with OCR technology to read and vocalize text-based information such as street names and signs. This will improve safety and risk reduction, increase independence and autonomy, enhance quality of life, and ensure better access to public spaces and opportunities.
Why did we create Soundscape+?
We developed Soundscape+ to assist blind and visually impaired individuals in better understanding their surroundings, focusing specifically on image recognition. Users can take photos, which are then analyzed and described by an AI. The AI identifies and interprets visible elements in the image, such as objects, landmarks, or street signs, providing a detailed description of the environment. Additionally, any text detected within the image can be read aloud, offering further information. Soundscape+ provides reliable support, helping users perceive their surroundings more clearly and navigate with greater confidence.
The App – a quick little overview
How we worked
Our development process was structured around Agile methodologies, utilizing Miro for Scrum-based task management and project organization. This allowed our team to break down complex tasks, assign responsibilities, and track progress efficiently. With Miro, we collaborated seamlessly, ensuring alignment on project goals and milestones.
For the application development, we leveraged GitHub for version control, enabling smooth collaboration and code management across the team. We built the application using React Native, integrating multiple libraries to create a seamless and user-friendly experience across IOS and Android. This technology stack allowed us to develop a responsive and accessible interface, ensuring optimal performance for our users.
In addition to these technologies, we integrated AI-driven image recognition into the application. This feature allows users to take photos and receive detailed descriptions of their surroundings, including identifying objects and reading street signs, further enhancing the functionality of the original Soundscape.
