During our stay in Halifax at NSCC, we worked on a real-world design challenge brought to us by Athena’s Playground, a local startup based in Halifax. Athena’s Playground is an action-first online platform for creative and lifestyle skills, offering two-hour immersive courses on everything from mixing cocktails to running your first D&D campaign. Their mission is to bridge the gap between curiosity and courage, turning “I’d love to try that” into “I’m actually doing it“.
The video content is only the starting point, though. The real heart of their platform lives in shared virtual spaces like live brainstorming huddles, virtual art galleries, and beginner-friendly dungeon crawls, where people practice alongside peers who are equally brand new.
The challenge they brought us was not a technical one but a deeply human one: “How might we build online community spaces that give people the courage to share their first learning milestones, allowing them to overcome the fear of looking foolish that makes them quit?” Adults are often terrified of being bad at things in front of others, and without a thoughtfully designed community safety net, users tend to hide their early attempts and quietly drift away.
Our response to this challenge was The Community Fridge — a structured model built around small, safe cohorts of 8 to 10 learners, called Hobby Pods, where people share first attempts, celebrate imperfection, and stay accountable to one another. The name reflects the core idea: just as a drawing on the fridge is put up with pride regardless of how it looks, the platform is designed to reward effort over polish and treat every messy first attempt as something worth showing off. Rather than launching a fully custom platform from the start, we proposed a phased approach that begins with a Discord-based pilot to validate the concept, moves to a self-hosted Fediverse stack for richer media and data ownership, and eventually evolves into a bespoke ActivityPub product built on everything learned along the way.
